Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the distribution of timber-laced ramparts in Europe. Although most of the evidence for these comes from continental sites, three British examples (South Cadbury, Bindon Hill & Burghead) are cited. Defences of earth or stone, incorporating elements of wood in their construction, have their origin in the Neolithic, reached the peak of their distribution in the Iron Age and continued to be built into the Migration period in some areas. The article then describes some methods of constructing timber-laced ramparts, with reference to twelve experimental reconstructions located in France, Belgium & Germany. | ||||
