Abstract:
Excavation adjacent to the British fortification and Anglian royal stronghold on Castle Rock, Dunbar, East Lothian, revealed evidence of occupation from the Pre-Roman Iron Age to modern times. After a promontory fort, an unenclosed settlement of roundhouses was occupied in the second or third centuries AD. In the sixth century a Grubenhaus was constructed and subsequently post-in-trench structures enclosed by palisade and later by stone-founded rampart. Radiocarbon dates and a bronze buckle plate suggest these had gone out of use by the mid-seventh century. Other finds included coins and a gold and garnet pectoral cross fragment. Further timber buildings were erected before the mid-ninth century and defensive activity continued. The discontinuous Anglian occupation on the mainland must reflect the changing functions of the fortified centre on Castle Rock. The site is discussed in the context of archaeological and historical evidence from north-east Britain in the sixth and seventh centuries.
