Abstract:
Describes the remains of seventeen coffins of lead and wood, dating from 17th to late 19th centuries, from the vault of St Mary's parish church. They and the remains within them shed light on the little known subject of upper class burial in post-medieval Scotland (eg embalming). Documentary evidence is recounted and fittings and name plates (often detached and unattributable) illustrated.
