General description of old copper and lead/silver mining adits on and close to Ardmore Head, Co Waterford, followed by a detailed discussion of sixteenth--nineteenth-century documentary references to mining in the Ardmore area. No diagnostic indicators of the mining techniques used remain on the exposed rock surfaces of the adits because the rock is very soft or friable. Therefore, no physical evidence could be found to date the mines. Concludes that most of the adits at Ardmore Head and vicinity are of unknown date but they may be associated with mid seventeenth- and late eighteenth-century lead/silver workings at unlocated positions nearby which are referred to in the documentary sources. The surviving adits at Ardmore appear to be exceptional as largely undisturbed examples of early modern mining in either Britain or Ireland. | |
