This posthumous publication (see 94/882) discusses the problems in reconstructing the medieval history of the monastic settlement at Ardmore, Co Waterford, particularly the dating of its various buildings. These include an early oratory which may date to the eighth century AD, another possible oratory which now forms the chancel of the ruined cathedral at Ardmore (see also 94/1098), a round tower possibly of the late twelfth century, and a ruined church that is not thought to pre-date the twelfth century. Attention is also drawn to potential traces of a twelfth- or thirteenth-century monastic building which was later turned into a secular dwelling and stands opposite Ardmore Cathedral. The building may have housed a community of Augustinian Canons in the thirteenth century. However, no documentary sources refer to Ardmore at all in this period, while records spanning the early fourteenth to sixteenth centuries do not make any mention of a monastery there. | |||||||||
