Abstract:
In investigating the 'multiple estate' theory (Taylor & Brown 1978), several levels of post-Conquest settlement and administrative hierarchy are identified with a view to constructing a comprehensive model of settlement and administration. It is difficult to sustain the view that the Saxon administration derives directly from the Roman period; but many more (excavation) data are needed.
