Parts 4 and 5 of the local historian's guide to sources. 4) deals with specialist maps of communication routes, interesting to both transport and local historian. Good collections of transport maps are held in various record offices, eg British Transport Historical Records (mainly railways), GPO Records (mail coach routes, horse and foot posts), and national and county Record Offices. Critical accounts are given of the available map material on roads (13th cent onwards) river navigation (16th cent), canals (18th cent) and railways. 5) discusses marine charts, which record the 5,000 mile long coastline of the British Isles from 16th cent onwards and often contain much detail of land features. They also illuminate recurrent themes such as English Channel fortifications, or the economic history of sea trade. Text figures show which areas are covered by surveys and charts. Despite inherent pitfalls, maps can sometimes answer a question, provide records of coastal erosion, or help to locate wrecks for the nautical archaeologist. | |
