The revised European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (see also 94/778) signed in Malta in January 1992 by the twenty member states of the Council of Europe marks a significant evolution in attitudes compared with the original Convention of 1969. The Convention's articles cover definition and identification of the archaeological heritage, creation of sites and monuments inventories, prevention of illicit excavation and trade, integration of conservation with planning and development, financing of research, collection and dissemination of information, promotion of public awareness, and mutual assistance. The Convention's principles derive largely from the Charter for the Protection and Management of the Archaeological Heritage of the International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management of ICOMOS. |
