Abstract:
Discusses the history of Caphouse Colliery, site of the museum, and explains the reasoning behind this choice of location. Caphouse is representative of mines in the western, upland coalfield of Yorkshire, where there was a tradition of smaller, often seasonally worked pits going back to the middle ages, if not to Roman times. This pattern of exploitation is contrasted with that of the eastern coalfield, which not developed until the late nineteenth century, since a greater capital outlay was required to reach the deeper seams and an efficient transport infrastructure needed to ensure a wider market base. The landscape around Caphouse is one of the best-preserved landscapes of early mining and is dotted with remains of workings, many of which are associated with medieval religious houses, while the colliery itself is a palimpsest of historic buildings. Proposals for the development of the Mining Museum are also noted.
