Abstract:
Remains of Mammuthus primigenius (Blumenbach) were collected from gravel workings and their stratigraphic position established as Late-glacial. The animals had been trapped in a kettlehole and rapidly buried, providing a near-complete skeleton of an adult and parts of three juveniles. AMS and proportional-counting 14C gave results around 13 000 BP, some 5000 years later than expected, thus reopening the debate on causes of extinction. J Saunders comments, p 419 of same issue.
