Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Small-scale exploration of two middens (Cnoc Sligeach and Caisteal-nan-Gillean II) in 1970 produced promising results, and fieldwork added several new sites to those already known on the island. Water-sieving gave maximum yield of midden-material. Noteworthy are (1) the great abundance of fish bone, representing about as much nourishment as that provided by the shellfish whose remains are more obvious. Half a dozen species such as saithe, wrasse and ling have been identified so far. (2) Shellfish included limpet, dog whelk, oyster, crab and lobster. Few birds or mammals were exploited. (3) Artefacts included limpet scoops and heavily worked flint flakes (lames écaillés) but microliths were absent. All the Oronsay middens are 10-15 metres above mean sea-level. Work continues, including a search for dwellings. | ||||||
