Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A consideration of a well-known mosaic in the British Museum in the light of its inscription, iconography and meaning. The nineteenth-century discovery of the pavement is described, and a series of plates listed for the first time. The architecture and plan of the villa as revealed by air photography is discussed in the light of comparative examples, giving new evidence for the morphology and setting. Particular attention is paid to associated features, such as stock enclosures, of this and other villas in the Thruxton group, some of which date back to prehistory. Quintus Natalius Natalinus, the proprietor, is revealed as having been highly Romanised, probably a devotee of the cult of Bacchus and possibly a supporter of the ill-fated regime of Magentius. His antecedents seem to have been local and his forebears are assumed to have farmed the same fields for centuries, probably from well before the Roman Conquest. There is an appendix providing details of the plates in `Illustrations of the Thruxton mosaic' by John Lickman (23-4). | ||||||||
