Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The largest of the mosaics from the Pitney villa in Somerset, found and destroyed in the last century, depicted Bacchus surrounded by eight mythological figures, with busts of Winds in the corners; an adjoining panel depicted Cupid--Seasons. The paper discusses the iconography of the eight figures and will suggest that the key to their interpretation lies in misplacement of two of the panels when the mosaic was originally laid. It will be contended that the myths of the four couples would have been known to a patron familiar with the works of Ovid, and hence that this lost mosaic provides further evidence for literacy in Roman Britain. | |||||
