Argues that the original Norman tower at Ely (which collapsed in AD 1322) was octagonal and that this helped to inspire the design of its replacement: a dome-like structure crowned by an octagonal lantern. Suggests that the ground plan of the Norman church has affinities with the plans of some Romanesque churches in the Rhineland, which also possess octagonal central towers. Also notes the presence of an octagonal Norman tower at nearby Swaffham Priory. | ||||||||
