Abstract:
The tower was demolished in 1822 but drawings and prints from c 1615 onwards allow a detailed reconstruction. It is suggested that the construction of the W towers and façade, usually dated as late as 1120-30, is contemporary with the W bays of the nave, c 1100. The chevron ornament in the tower's lower stages is therefore earlier than the use of the motif at Durham cathedral c 1110. F B
