Abstract:
[SK 5489]. A main building period from the mid-1170s to the 1180s and the derivation of architectural characteristics from specific parts of NE France are proposed. There are no building documents but the suggested dates accord with grants of land to the abbey and a papal confirmation of privileges of 1186. A date after c 1160 is appropriate for most of the fabric, which was redesigned to incorporate a crossing-tower. Structural details, however, indicate a date in the 1170s, when the major Cistercian churches of Yorkshire were finished or nearing completion; the design of Roche is an advance on all of them in plan, in the vertical emphasis of its subdivision by bays, and in its three-storey vaulted elevation. The latter is paralleled by Preuilly (Seine-et-Marne), but architectural details seem to derive from the Soissonnais area of Picardy, tardily and possibly via Kirkstead (Lincs). D P
