Seen in the light of the accomplished carvings now emerging from York Minster excavations, the Ryedale (especially Middleton) crosses now appear not as uncertain explorations of new styles, but as sculptures created according to contemporary regional fashions and in varying degrees of ability. Some new interpretations of the iconography are offered and a date of mid-late 10th century suggested for the whole group. See also 74/2492. | |
