Abstract:
[SE 549789]. A reconstruction is essayed of the most ambitious 12th-century Cistercian building in England, and the sources of its inspiration are discussed. A whole new architectural vocabulary is evident in the bundled-shaft piers, the handling of decorative detail and of junctions of structural elements, and the introduction of a wooden barrel vault. The sources for this treatment are mainly in NE France-Flanders, and the energy is attributable to the community's Savigniac origins. Work must have begun in late 1160 and been substantially complete by 1177. Byland's influence on the early gothic of N England is traced.
