Abstract:
The persistence of the Celtic temple plan, even when executed in a Romanised idiom and in many variations of detail, is probably due to religious conservatism. Hence the plan form (squarish, round or polygonal) should be a securer means of identifying a Celtic dedication than contemporary statues or altars. Evidence is adduced from Continental and British examples, and reconstructions, functions, antecedents and Romanised examples are discussed.
