Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A 14C-dated pollen diagram from Long Lough, a lowland site in mid Down, showed mixed agriculture had been continuous over much of the last two millennia. The introduction of cereal cultivation at between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD is earlier than usual at sites with heavy soils in Ireland. There was no palynological evidence to support the historical view that there had been substantial 17th century woodland clearance. Landscape enclosure by hedges, starting in the 18th century, was detectable; flax cultivation was relatively recent. Ulmus was present through the period AD 600 to 1700, contrary to the historic view. Au(abr) | ||||||
