Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The last report, covering material from 1989 to the cessation of activities in 1992. `Research reports 1990-92' begin with `Strategy and fieldwork programme at Sutton Hoo' by Martin Carver (4-9) which provides an overview of developments following the original strategy, which aimed at the excavation of the Sutton Hoo site, remote mapping of the 12ha surrounding area, and broader settlement survey of the Deben Valley. `The Anglo-Saxon cemetery: an interim report' is by Martin Carver (10-19) and includes `Table 2: Sutton Hoo: inventory of Anglo-Saxon burials' (17-19). `The prehistoric settlement: an interim report' by Madeleine Hummler (20-5) considers evidence pertaining to site development between the Middle Neolithic and Iron Age. `The environmental investigations' by Martin Carver (26-7) provide analysis of the data for the botanical and agricultural sequences. `The East Anglian kingdom survey: south-east Suffolk' by John Newman (28-31) reports the proposed settlement shifts from the Late Roman period to the expansion of the ninth to tenth centuries. Excavation is now called for to confirm this hypothesis. `The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Boss Hall, Ipswich' by John Newman (32-6) details this high status Early AS cremation and inhumation cemetery which contained a wealthy female burial. There is an appendix, `Table 3: a simple comparison of Early Anglo-Saxon brooches from seven East Anglian cemeteries' (36). `Management reports' include details of the `Publication programme' (37), `The management plan for the Sutton Hoo site, 1992' (38-42) whilst the `Chronicle' section (43-8) gives details of publications, additions to the archive, public lectures, BBC television work, visitors, exchange schemes, staff and participation, sponsorship and expenditure, the Sutton Hoo Society, and acknowledgements including those made to staff who have recently left the project in `Farewell to the field team' by Madeleine Hummler & Martin Carver (47-8). | |||||||||||||||||||
