Abstract:
The abbey has been completely destroyed and no evidence of the church proper now exists at the site. The possibility that there may have been a west transept depends primarily on a plan of the monastic complex published in the late eighteenth century. Both the original and the copy of it from which a printed engraving was made are lost. It is impossible to reconcile the plan with either the documented history of the church fabric, or with the engraving of c 1661. Spot excavations have not confirmed the existence of a west transept. Finally, information about the monastic buildings, contained in accounts made following the Dissolution, does not tally with the specifics offered in the plan. `Appendix I' provides the post-Dissolution inventories, and `Appendix II' a note on the abbey seals.
