Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The paper looks at the areas where two of the earliest blast furnaces in Staffordshire were located, areas which were characterised by extensive woodland and by the previous presence of an iron industry. The author examines how the process of conversion of trees to charcoal was organised, to determine what the fuel requirements were and how the woodland was exploited to meet them, and to determine the degree to which the resource was truly sustainable.
