Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Rebuttal of an earlier article (see 94/952) centring on the problematic definition of `heritage', particularly its application to the concept of `landscape' which should be seen as the accumulation over time of changes in attitudes to property and in the types and methods of agriculture practised. Therefore, no landscape today is `authentic' (ie natural/unspoilt) and the use of this term should be regarded as a method to maintain the subordinate status of the disadvantaged. In this sense, historical problems are reduced by the tourist to an aesthetic pleasure. Academic history can serve to correct the simplified or biased histories presented by heritage parks and interpretive centres. Concludes that academic research may answer questions over who makes heritage definitions (and, thus, who benefits from them) and what are the long-term economic benefits of tourism and its impact on jobs. |
