Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Argues that local historians should shift their attention from a locality to the people who inhabited it. Such people were not restricted to that locality but had ties to other areas including the parish, the market fair, and meeting places of various societies. The study of sociability is highlighted as a way of analysing local mentalities, including club/society membership, marriage, visiting, the layout of the house, the local interpretation of archaeological monuments, and religious worship (including visits to the locality's holy well or other pilgrimage centre). Contends that understanding what local people believed about the supernatural world is one of the greatest challenges for the local historian today. |
