Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Argues that the English antiquarian John Henry Parker was the first person to use the term `tower house' in a discussion of Irish antiquities that he visited in a tour of Ireland in 1858. Parker also provided the first definition of tower houses with reference to specific sites around the country. The second occurrence of the term `tower house' is attributed to William Frederick Wakeman in his Archaeologia Hibernica (1891) to which Parker also contributed a discussion on the architectural features of tower-house entrances. Closes with `Appendix 1: List of the castellated buildings included in Parker's Observations on the ancient domesticated architecture of Ireland (Parker 1860, 149--76)' (7). | ||
