Abstract:		 Surveys the demographic, economic and administrative development of an estate in northern Antrim that was granted in 1604 to Randall Macdonnell, later created Earl of Antrim. After the 1660s, this grant was the only land controlled by the Macdonnells following the loss of their Scottish estates. Discusses how the Macdonnells used a combination of the existing native townland structure with the manor court to establish and enforce a system of land tenure that not only allowed for the management of the estate but also replaced kinship bonds broken when colonists left Scotland with that of landlord and tenant.
