Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the meaning of the term `frontier' (as distinct from that of `boundary') in the context of the spatial division between the Anglo-Norman colony and the native territories in medieval Ireland. The defence of the colony's frontiers was provided by regularly spaced mottes around the cities of Dublin and Carlow or by clusters of mottes along the fringes of the lordships of Meath and Ulster, while moated sites are thought to have provided only limited individual protection to minor tenants engaged in assarting. The lack of archaeological evidence for the abandonment of colonial settlements in the early-fourteenth century, the difficulty of distinguishing native ringforts from colonial ringworks and the regional variations in different types of Anglo-Norman sites and monuments are also looked at. | |||
