Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses the value of conserving streetscapes and townscapes to preserve the `character' of small market towns, though they may contain few, if any, buildings which individually have special architectural merit. Outlines the various Conservation Areas set up by the Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland) under the provisions of the Planning Order (NI) 1972. This order was bolstered by the publication of the Department's A Planning Strategy for Rural Northern Ireland in 1993 which includes guidelines and principles for development in Conservation Areas. These Conservation Areas include predominantly seventeenth-century plantation towns as well as eighteenth- and nineteenth-century foundations or re-designed boroughs. The variety of forms in the street patterns of the various towns is emphasised, as well as each settlement's origins (whether as a medieval borough, an estate town, or as a mid nineteenth-century railway station). | |||
