Abstract:
Overview of the results of an ongoing programme of archaeological air survey begun in Ireland in 1989 and funded by the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy. The survey's results formed the basis for an exhibition shown around Ireland and in Germany in 1993--94. The two main aims of the project are to detect artificial subsurface features not easily seen from the ground and to document the impact of landscape change on surviving archaeological remains (see also 95/1065). Several new cropmark sites were identified, especially in the dry summers of 1989 and 1990, when a transect of the Barrow valley was surveyed. Other transects were located along the River Nore, the coastal areas of Cos Waterford and Wexford, and in Co Louth. The success of aerial photographic survey in increasing archaeological information about an area is illustrated by reference to Dunmanoge, Co Kildare. Concludes by outlining the future plans of the project.
