Discusses the impact of Anglo-Norman conquest and settlement in thirteenth-century Connacht, including sub-infeudation; marriage alliances; agriculture; and Anglo-Norman economic investment in the building (or re-building), provisioning and defence of castles; founding religious houses; establishing boroughs, weekly markets and annual fairs; constructing town walls, pigeon houses, and grain, fulling and brewery mills; and the development of ale production. Meanwhile, many native Irish rulers were retained as tenants of the new Anglo-Norman lords whilst others continued to build castles and endow monasteries in some parts of the province. | ||||||||
