Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses the general processes of landscape change that arose in Ireland primarily following the Great Famine (up to which point Irish estate management generally suffered from under-investment), and concentrates by way of example on the types and quantity of improvements (such as the construction or modification of farmhouses and outbuildings, planting of hedgerows and land drainage) carried out by the new management of the Shirley estate in Co Monaghan from c 1843 to the 1860s. Concludes that the combination of rising tenant incomes, depopulation of the cottiers and small farmers during the famine years, and landlord investment (especially during the agriculturally prosperous post-famine years) resulted in the emergence of Ireland's landscape as it appears today. | ||
