Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Investigates the topographical development of the Anglo-Norman town of Ardee, Co Meath, to explore the concept of the composite town plan in an Irish context, using documentary, cartographic and architectural evidence. Applying the plan-analysis technique, five plan-units or phases are identified. Phase one involves the late-twelfth century foundation of the town around a newly-built parish church whilst phases two and three represent expansions of burgage settlement in the early-fourteenth century and later. The fourth phase is marked by the enclosure of a large area of land that remained underdeveloped until the nineteenth century, while the fifth entails the Irishtown suburb whose own gatehouse was probably built in the late-sixteenth or early-seventeenth centuries. Concludes that not only is plan-analysis a useful methodology for assessing the form and pace of plan development in medieval Ireland, but that it has shown Ardee to have had a complex, five-phase, chronological plan development sequence despite the town's apparently simple linear form and modest scale. | |||||||
