Synthesis of a decade's research on boundary earthworks, whose fragmentary state and multiperiod nature render it difficult to deduce territories. Study of patterns of Bronze Age reaves in the outh-west, and of Anglo-Saxon charter bounds in southern England, enable some general principles of early land division to be drawn, particularly in relation to natural features. Application of these principles to some other prehistoric linear earthworks has allowed, in some cases, reasonable deductions to be made on the nature of the territories. Evidence from hillforts, barrows, pottery, and coins is harder to use and needs integration where possible with other boundary evidence. Some wider points (eg dating, functions, evolution) are also considered. | |||||||
