Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Describes an unusual 6.7 cm diameter solid sphere found in Miltown Malbay, Co Clare, which is thought to have been a ball used in hurling or in sporting competitions as played perhaps in medieval times. Upon scientific analysis, its outer layer was found to be composed of a glue made from animal bone and manganese. By contrast, a collection of ten balls in the National Museum of Ireland, each of which had been recovered at depth from peat bogs, were composed of cattle or horse hair. | ||||||
