Radiocarbon dating of ancient pine stumps from blanket bog in north Co Mayo (which overlies the Neolithic settlement and field system known as Céide Fields) shows that pines spread across the bog c 5,300 BP as in northern Scotland and other parts of northern Europe at that time. This extensive pine forest subsequently rapidly declined in Mayo to be replaced by further bog growth c 4,400 BP, a situation echoed in Scotland, and representing significant rapid changes in climate during this period. | ||||||||
