Reports electron-probe microanalysis of eleven chemical elements in the coinage from AD 973 to 1066. There is strong evidence for the precision and reliability of moneyers, and brass was available in every borough. Lead isotope analysis of the silver might resolve the question whether Rammelsberg silver from the Harz Mountains was coming in. In all, 230 coins were analysed, sixty from the Bryn Maelgwyn hoard of Cnut and 170 others. | |||||
