Abstract:		 The article describes how the analysis of two aerial photographs leads to a consideration of the way the evidence they contain can be utilised by `comparing and contrasting'. Specific cases and simple generalised models are used to do this. Finally, a complex model, illustrative of multi-dimensional thought and setting individual cases in both time and space, is used to picture the articulation of English settlement systems. The discussion embraces both fundamental empirical analysis of specific places and a quest for large-scale generalising statements.
