Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The article examines case studies of the social and economic significance of estuaries in the east and west of Britain. The author suggests that they were only important in certain socio-economic and political spheres, and that, particularly for the lower levels of society, they often represented a barrier to contact. It is also argued that the significance of estuaries changed over time as the nature of economic interaction and political structures evolved. |
