Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers how visitors' perceptions of Stonehenge have changed. Divided into three parts: a discussion of Bill Brandt's photography, focussing on his work at Stonehenge in 1944 and 1947; a consideration of how people reach Stonehenge, drawing on various accounts dating from 1562 to 1908; and an analysis of how journeys to the monument have shaped changing appreciations of it. Notes that the enclosure of the stones in 1901 changed the main route of approach from south to north, and argues that this had a profound effect on visitors' experience. | |||
