Report on archaeological investigations at a series of sites on Widemarsh Street, Hereford, in and adjacent to an Area of Archaeological Importance. The investigations revealed evidence of the Saxon alignment of Widemarsh Street and its relationship to the north gate of the Saxon defences and to the church of All Saints; urban development from the eleventh century onwards, as a route to and from the Norman market place; evidence of the medieval tanning industry; stone cellars from the later medieval period, indicating high quality buildings and possibly commercial storage; stone robbing from Blackfriars Priory following the Dissolution; and demolition and clearance of the area overlooking Widemarsh Gate during the Civil War, followed by reconstruction and urban renewal during the eighteenth century.
