Abstract:
Quantitative analysis of sherds shows that small supplies of Italian wine in amphorae were reaching the southern tribes of Britain as early as second half of 2nd century BC: Dressel 1A to the south and Dressel 1B to the eastern counties north of the Thames. A similar pattern occurs at the turn of 1st century BC, when Dressel 1-Pascual 1 reaches the south coast and Italian Dressel 2-4 the east. Soon Dressel 20s (Baetican olive oil) and Dressel 7-11s (Spanish fish sauce) were reaching both areas fairly evenly. Indeed the flow of Spanish olive oil was as regular before the Conquest as if Britain was already part of the Empire.
