General account of the date, distribution, construction and astronomical associations of stone circles and henges with an emphasis on Stonehenge, particularly its different stages of building and its initial alignment on the midsummer sunset/midwinter sunrise and later on the midsummer sunrise (see also 92/323). Henges are seen as an evolving settlement form with the largest examples such as Avebury possibly representing intercultural meeting places. Mentions various ideas put forward to explain the ritual significance of Stonehenge.
