Abstract:
The article looks at differing attitudes of modern Western society to treatment of the remains of the recently dead, and of the remains of those who died in antiquity. The use of human remains for research and display in art and in museum collections, and legal responses to the collection and display of human remains from 1832 to 2004, are summarised. In particular the author discusses the application of the Human Tissue Act 2004 to art and museum collections.
