Abstract:
The materials examined were concentrated in a few parts of the site. Much of the ironworking debris was from tenth- to eleventh-century contexts but there were significant amounts from later contexts which may not be residual. Late Saxon material included a small amount of tap slag and larger amounts of smithing slag including hearth bottoms. There were a few Late Saxon crucibles but most of the copper-rich debris is associated with bell pits and comes from deposits dated to c 1250--1400. Further work is suggested to identify the nature of the copper alloys being worked at both periods and to attempt to resolve the date of production of the slags in the later context.
