Abstract:
The 11th Beatrice de Cardi lecture surveys the successes and failures of rescue archaeology since the formation of Rescue in 1971. Funding remains pitifully low because 'we have failed to capture the imagination and support of the public on a scale large enough to be a powerful influence. . .' Someone should write a book Education through archaeology showing its broad appeal and value; the Stafford Castle project shows one way of involving the public. As for funding, the calmly worked-out programmes of the Welsh archaeological trusts ought to be copied in England. 'Flying squads', however expert, should not be relied on as they do not know the terrain; and far more use, and intelligent use, should be made of amateur helpers.
