Abstract:
Summary of the Fourteenth Beatrice de Cardi Lecture given at Birmingham in 1989, which defined problems and assessed needs. The British landscape was transformed by the Industrial Revolution in only five generations, and the last two decades have brought us to realize the importance of industrial monuments and landscapes as part of the national estate. Finding the resources, whether private or state, to record and preserve say 50-100 key sites from this 'intractable residue' must be a priority. Adaptive re-use needs very careful and sympathetic handling. Finally we have well below the critical mass of fully trained practitioners to provide the necessary expertise in consultancy.
