Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A survey of selected houses in New Radnor, Rhayader and Presteigne. No complete timber house survives from New Radnor, and no houses earlier than 17th century in Rhayader. There are few houses earlier than 17th century in Presteigne also, but there is an important group of c 1590-1680, with three main types: (a) gable to street; (b) fronting street, two-unit, ?with central chimney; (c) fronting street, with cross-wing at one end. During the 17th century the elaborate internal carpentry of the 15th and 16th centuries became confined to the parlour, but the external decoration, including close studding, remained until the end of the 17th century.
