Abstract
The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:
The article discusses Firle Place near Lewes, a sixteenth-century courtyard house superficially Palladianised during the eighteenth century. It is suggested that one of the architectural features of this later work, the serliana on the east range, was inspired by ancient Syrian arches of the ninth to sixth centuries BC, via their imitation during the later Roman period and again in various parts of Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
