Abstract:
a single evaluation trench revealed medieval deposits that may have been part of a building associated with Reading Abbey. As a result, six excavation trenches were dug prior to the development of the site for offices. Several phases of activity were identified, the earliest being stray finds of probable Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon dates. Elements of a medieval building comprising walls, foundations, chalk floors and a drain were recorded and probably represent a part of the Hospitium Almshouses. The later, post-medieval phases of the site included evidence for the robbing-out of the earlier walls, the digging of pits and metalworking. The presence of metalworking debris comprising crucibles, furnace linings and casting waste is of some interest in furthering understanding of small-scale urban metalwork production in this period
